Comet Garradd

Here is today's photo of Comet Garradd. This shot is 20 Min exposure in the luminance channel and is most interesting as its passing a very tiny galaxy, and looks a pretty picture!

Finally the weather cleared and I got the nice color data I was after. The comet is moving quite swiftly at the moment and working up a stunning full color image is pretty hard work.

  1. Nice pic. How do you stack several comet pictures to get a color one? The comet moves in between takes...

  2. In the shot above, the coma has in fact moved, in Color there are some techniques wher you do one stack for the coma of the comet, and another stack for the stars. You lift the stars off one and the comet of the other and then combine....(thats the simple explanation....its a little more difficult than that)

    See here.....

Its still a bit rough and I have pushed the processing a bit hard.....in the end practice ;-)

  4. Would it be OK to use your Garradd color image on the website of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, as part of our online Sky Report for September?
